Fibroids

Q:  I would like to know if you are familiar with the Uterine Fibroid Embolization procedure?

I have several fibroids, the largest is the size of a cantaloupe, my size is that of a 9 month pregnant woman.  I knew something was not right for years, but, I only found this all out lately.

I am only 35 years old, am very hesitant on a hysterectomy and myomectomy is scary because of the possible side effects and the possibility that it can bring on menopausal symptoms. I feel more at ease with the embolization, but, it only shrinks the fibroids to 50% the present size within a total of 6 months, do you know if I would be able to get a second embolization in the near future to work on the leftover fibroids and having them shrink 50%?  About depo provera birth control, I read that this helps to actually shrink the fibroids as well, what are the fact about this?

A:  Embolization is a procedure done by radiologists where a thin plastic tube is slipped into blood vessel in the groin, threaded up to the area near the uterus and then small pellets the size of grains of sand are used to block off the blood supply to the fibroids. It may shrink the fibroids but will not eliminate them as you already know. I am not aware that they are offering a second embolization to the same person.  You need to know that there is a 2% risk that the embolization will put you into menopause.

Depo Provera may help but after about 6 months there is then the risk of osteoporosis or loss of bone strength.  Usually if you stop the Depo the fibroids return.

Usually the best options are hysterectomy if you have finished having a family.  We usually do a myomectomies (removal of just the fibroids) if fertility is to be persevered.
