Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Q: I am 26 years old and have recently been diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome).  I will not go into too much detail but my Husband and I are wanting to start a family but I have not had a period since November 2004. My family doctor does not seem to know anything about PCOS and just told me to go away and see what happens!!!! Can you give me some advice, should I ask her to refer me to someone who would know more about PCOS and who could help me.

A: I really don’t want to go against the advice of your family doctor and so I will tell you my philosophy in general for treating such patients.  Most of the time, waiting will not solve the problem.  PCOS is a problem of insulin metabolism and I have very good success treating patients with Metformin, an insulin-lowering drug.  About half of the patients also need another medication to cause ovulation and I usually use Letrozole.  I would suggest you ask for a referral to a gynecologist expert in infertility and get an assessment.
